The issue with whether or not school should teach students about sex has been a pressing issue for quite some time now. Schools have had different ideas on how to approach the issue as well. Some schools avoid the topic completely, some are very avid about teaching abstinence only sexual education, and then some are giving out contraceptives to their students without parental consent. Should school teach students about sex, should we teach them about contraceptives and STDs? Should we teach safe sex techniques or should we teach abstinence?
II. Research Summary
Abstinence only sexual education has been part of many schools curriculum for a long time now, but some people really don't agree with it. Some schools teach full sexual education, they teach about safe sex techniques and the use of contraceptives. Studies show differing results about the effectiveness of abstinence only education. Looking at the differing studies, we can come up with an idea on how to better approach the issue. All schools are have different policies when it comes to sexual education and contraceptives. On one hand there are schools that do not even talk about contraception, and solely promote abstinence, while on the complete other end of the spectrum there are schools handing out birth control to eleven year old girls. I believe an even balance somewhere in the middle is where most schools should aim for. If most schools followed the same policy instead of such a variety their would be less confusion on what is right or wrong.
